Grudem, Ethics, & Triangles (also angels and demons)

This past week our PC class had the privilege of sitting under Wayne Grudem, who taught us on the subject of Ethics. Amazing! Dr. Grudem is one of the towering figures in Evangelical Christianity. He continues to pour books that are immense in scope and extremely influential (Systematic Theology, Recovering Biblical Manhood and Womanhood, the ESV Bible and the ESV Study Bible). What he most contributes to Evangelicalism is a relentless Biblical basis. Praise God!

We covered so many topics in our Ethics class; I wish I could blog about them all. But what I wanted to share the most was the "Ethical Triangle" that he shared. Here are some excerpts from my notes:

--- Christian ethics answers the question, "What does the whole Bible require us to do or think or feel with respect to any given life situation?"
--- Christian ethics is the study of how to live the Christian life.
--- We can see every ethical question from three perspectives:
  1. Actions (Examples: Exod. 20:12-16; Rom. 13:7)
  2. Attitudes (Examples: Exod 20:17; 1 Sam. 16:7; Gal. 5:22-23; Prov. 21:2)
  3. Results - intended and actual (Examples: 1 Cor. 10:31; 1 Cor. 14:26)
--- A life pleasing to God is one in which all three perspectives (actions, attitudes, and results) glorify God through conforming to what the Bible teaches.

I've included in the pictures a diagram of the ethical triangle.

  4. Dr. Grudem teaching on the church in which he drew (horrible) pictures of angel and demons flying above it.
  5. Dr. Grudem's extremely popular introduction to "Systematic Theology" (the best of its kind!)
  6. The ESV Study Bible, of which Dr. Grudem was the general editor (also the best of its kind!)
